UCP provides a continuum of Playgroups for ages 1-5 years
UCP’s Playgroups are designed to introduce children with special needs to a classroom setting, and to increase their endurance and skills to get them ready for school! Our playgroups utilize the expertise of our PT, OT, and SLP, but no direct therapy is provided.
Pathfinders Mondays 9-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11:45 a.m.
Ages: 1-3 Location: UCP Therapy Center
Cost: No charge for UCP Clients, others $60/month
Our Pathfinders playgroup is an introduction to a classroom setting. This is often the first time a child is away from a parent and/or around his or her peers. By only lasting just over an hour, this group allows children to begin to acclimate to a structured classroom setting in a safe environment and with staff who understand each child’s unique needs. Skills targeted include: gross motor and outside play; sensory activities; language; choice making; transitioning between activities; finger feeding and straw/cup use; and fine motor skills.
Explorers Wednesdays 8:30-10:30 a.m.
Ages: 2 ½ -4 Location: UAH Early Learning Center Cost: $60/month
Our Explorers playgroup is the next step in preschool readiness. The class time is longer, and more skills are targeted that would be needed for a traditional classroom setting. The same skills targeted in our Explorers playgroup are addressed with an increased emphasis on: communication, daily living skills, following directions, strength and coordination, social skills, and other preschool skills (coloring, cutting, counting, letters, etc.). All activities are adapted as needed to be developmentally appropriate for each child.
Trailblazers Tuesdays/Thursdays 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Ages 3-5 Location: UAH Early Learning Center
Cost: $200/month + fees
Our Trailblazers playgroup is the newest program as part of our continuum working toward the transition to a private Mother’s Morning Out or preschool, HeadStart, public school developmental preschool, UAH ELC program, or even Kindergarten. By attending this group two days a week, a child can build more endurance to tolerate the activities required in a classroom setting. In addition to the skills targeted in our other playgroups, we will focus on potty training, independent feeding skills, and increased peer socialization. UCP’s PT, OT, and SLP will be available for observation/technical assistance as needed to support the teachers in preparing developmentally appropriate classroom activities. A registered nurse may be onsite as needed for medical needs.
