The Elsie S. Bellows Fund, operated by the United Cerebral Palsy national office, provides grants for purchasing assistive technology equipment that increases, maintains or improves the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities in the community. The federal definition of assistive technology is “any piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”

Earnings from the principal of this fund are allocated on an annual basis by United Cerebral Palsy to UCP Huntsville and other affiliates.

Applications must be typed.  Applications will be accepted until 2020 funding is depleted.

The Elsie S. Bellows Fund provides funds to UCP Huntsville to purchase AT equipment on behalf of eligible applicants who are residents of the following Alabama counties: Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, Limestone and Cullman.

Examples of eligible assistive technology might include:

  • Wheelchairs (manual and electric)
  • Augmentative and alternative communication devices (AAC)
  • Environmental controls, including switches
  • Computer equipment
  • Lifts in the applicant’s own or nominee’s parent’s van or home
  • Hearing Aids/Visual Aids

This list is not meant to be inclusive/exclusive of requests eligible for funding under the Elsie S. Bellows funds. 

Examples of ineligible assistive technology include:

  • Automobiles
  • Evaluations of other assistive technology “services”
  • Standard furniture and appliances (that are not adapted)
  • Alterations or renovations to buildings
